Booktok influenced me into buying this book and I have to say it did not disappoint!!
Oraya is a human who was taken in as a young girl by the Night born vampire king. She is now a young woman and has decided to take her fate into her own hands and enter the kejari, a tournament where only one comes out the victor and is granted one wish by the goddess of Nyaxia herself.
I really liked the character of Oraya. I love a strong female main character and I think the way she developed throughout the book was really nice. I'm excited to see what happens with her story line in the next book!
I really really liked the plot in this book. The vampire take on a hunger games like tournament was really interesting. It was a nice pace as well as I didn't ever feel like anything dragged on too long.
I liked the world, I thought it was well thought out and I enjoyed the political push and pull. However I actually felt like we needed more of a world building dump at the beginning. There is so much background information that just kinda gets glazed over and I think it would have really added to the story to have seen those pieces; some being why the rishan/hiaj vampires are even fighting in the first place, more of orayas background, more info about all the clans, the history of the kejari and why it's taking place etc. because there wasn't enough info about a few things including these I found the first chunk of the book a bit confusing as we just jump right into the kejari without alot of background.
I never thought I would ask for more world building and explanations ... but I would not have been mad for another 100 pages at the beginning of the book with all that explained better!
The spice was good and I liked the spicy scenes. But I had seen all over tictok that is was a super spicy book! So I was a little disappointed that it was until more than halfway through that we get a little spice. I like a slow burn.. but I needed a bit more from it.
The ending!! I'm glad I waited to read it until the second book of the duo was out because I ran to amazon so fast to order the next one! Excited to see how rhain and Orayas story ends.
