Read this book for two reasons: I love female main characters in pirate stories, and fomo since most people I know have read this book. It was... okay. The plot points could be summed up in a few short sentences and it was very character-interaction based, which isn't a problem for me. I'm usually more interested in characters than plot. There was some adventure, and problem-solving, and a few clever bits.

I didn't really like all the abuse, and sexual assault, that Alsosa experienced that she was seemingly able to brush off like it was NBD. It really desensitized the reader to what were some fairly horrific things. The mention of sexual assault is extremely prevalent through out the whole book and it's casual usage to point out who was a good guy and who wasn't based on how much they wanted to sexually assault Alosa was off-putting and uncomfortable.

I don't really understand the relationship with Riden? He seemed like a good guy because he wasn't interested in physically harming her where he could, but he was ultimately still her captor and there were still a few times where the actions he took, how he physically handled her, and what he said still gave me the creepy crawlies.

I think Alosa is a strong female character in the fact that she is physically strong and adept in the story, but I would have liked to read a story where there was actual growth, or a more dynamic female main character.
