It took me about 50 pages for me to stop feeling like any minute this was going to turn into dystopian fiction -- it's not, and I knew that, but I still waited.
What it *is*, is realistic fiction about small-town desperation and high school friendships. Interesting, though I wish the writing had been a little less simplistic.
