Once I got into this book, it sped by, but it just took a bit too long to get going. I think I had to finish a whole section (out of three) before I could really consider myself into the story, so the pacing could have definitely been adjusted a bit. Obviously the first part of a book is going to be a bit slower, since that is when the author is introducing everyone, but that just lasted a bit too long here to the point where I wasn't sure if I was going to just be bored the rest of the novel. I'm glad that did not end up happening, but despite how much I enjoyed the rest of the novel, I took off .75 stars for that.

But once things got going, I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters most of all, what with the family relationships and also Nicholas and Collins' relationship to each other and to the sisters. (Also I totally called that
Marmam was Esther's real mom
and that
Richard was secretly evil, although we do find that out fairly early
!!) I was especially drawn to Nicholas, but all of their banter was fun to follow. All the side characters were interesting as well, especially Cecily and Pearl, and I really wish we'd gotten more of Pearl in the novel because she seems like she would have been a badass.

The magic system was super interesting and original. I always appreciate an original magic system that I haven't seen before, and this was very much that. The idea of books being magic and blood being what powers spells was fascinating, especially how certain people are not affected by magic but end up
being able to write the spells with their own blood
. And of course, if magic books were a thing, a company would try and amass them all under one roof so that they could have all the power and sell it to super rich people, so that is sadly just realistic.

Anyway, this was a great book and I'm glad that I read it! I would love to get a sequel with these characters, although I'm not sure what they would be doing...I just want to keep following their adventure and reading their interactions with each other.
