The Young Elites by Marie Lu
4.0
Woah! That book was a roller-coaster ride! I have many mixed feelings about this book, so brace yourselves for my jumbled mess of thoughts! Overall though, I really loved it and can't wait to read The Rose Society.
I would like to start off by pointing out what a unique idea inspired this book! So much of the young adult genre follows the same patterns, tropes, clichés and plotlines, but this book was so completely different to anything else I've ever read! It was very impressive and unpredictable.
The plot overall was just awesome!
I also loved the different points-of-view. It was really great to be able to see the story from a few different perspectives, because it gave a view on the events other than just the way Adelina saw things.
It was particularly interesting (not a cool, fun sort of interesting, more like a WOAH, WHAT? sort of interesting) to get to understand Teren a little bit better, because otherwise he could have been a character I would have easily dismissed and never thought about. In later books, I hope that there is a little less from Adelina's point of view and I get to hear more from the others.
The reason I only gave it four stars was that I didn't feel particularly attached to the other characters. I thought Teren was interesting, so was Violetta, and Raffaele is my precious cinnamon roll. But otherwise, I was fairly indifferent to them all. I liked them all well enough, I was just never really emotionally attached to them.
But really, I'm just being controversial and difficult about the characters. They were really very well written and when I think about them looking back, I really am quite fond of them.
Overall, this book was awesome, epic, exhilarating, wonderful and unpredictable. I highly recommend it! Can't wait to read the next one!

Spoiler
I never guessed that Adelina was such a complex character! At the start she seemed like a really good protagonist and then you slowly start to realise that she can't control her powers and it's getting out of hand... Then bam! Before you realise it, she's started killing and it's way out of control! Also, there are plot twists everywhere! I never saw any of the entire story coming. Maybe I'm just oblivious, but wow! What a thrilling story!I also loved the different points-of-view.
