I thought this was a fantastic book. It is a coming of age novel with a lot of heavy themes. The characters in the novel feel real and alive, and the portrayal of female friendship in all its complexity is really accurate. The struggle of being jealous of each other because of what they are and what you aren’t and trying to work through that. The fact that as women we compulsively compare ourselves to every other female around us whether we want to or not. Debbie’s journey through depression, alcoholism, and figuring out her sexuality is very real and something a lot of people go through and to read it was to feel relief that other people have gone through it as well. I felt so frustrated with her when she repeatedly tried to talk to people about her problems but then wouldn’t tell the truth or say what was actually wrong, but that’s the point. In Ireland, the stigma is not to talk about it and this book was shedding light on that and the importance of reaching out for help when you are struggling. ALSO the prose is magical.
