Straight up don’t know what the HECK to think of this book bc im still REELING. Didnt like how slow it started and then how inconsistent the pacing was (slow then rapid conflict, minimal resolution, then slow again, rinse repeat) but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t at the absolute mercy of this book for the last 10 days. I felt surprise and rage during this book but also OUTRAGE IN THE LAST 20 PAGES!!!!!!! I thought I was so prepared after all the theories I considered + rereading Fourth Wing but the fact that I feel like I need to go back and reread Fourth Wing AND Iron Flame again knowing what I know now… Rebecca Yarros better FIX THIS and ANNOUNCE A RELEASE DATE FOR BOOK 3 because UGH IM A WRECK!!!! I’ll also say that there are two types of outrage when reading a book— outrage bc the writing is good or outrage bc the writing is bad— and this is definitely the former.

EDIT: 10 days after reading this, my feelings have regulated a bit. Did I enjoy it? Sure. Do I have so many issues with it? Absolutely. Should've been split into 2 books, Violet and Xaden should've had actual character development instead of just arguing and/or having sex, and there needed to be like half the amount of events/plot points. Like actually go into detail on something instead of glazing over it just to move onto the next thing. Hoping book 3 is better but im way too invested in the story to quit even if it’s not.
