A Winter in New York by Josie Silver

3.0

The romance in this is absolutely adorable because Gio is literally the sweetest. However, this is NOT a romance book imo. It’s much more a contemporary story about a woman seeking a fresh start in New York after leaving a terrible relationship, losing her mom, etc.

The first 140 pages were rather boring if I’m being honest. I think because I was expecting a Christmas romance I was having a hard time getting into it. Iris realizes she has a secret family recipe for the local gelato shop and she is trying to help Gio recreate the recipe without saying she has “the recipe”. At that point I wasn’t invested, but I am glad I stuck it out because the middle was precious and there were a few genuinely great moments. I even caught myself squealing at how cute it was. I was fairly certain things were picking up for the rest of the story, but unfortunately the ending lost me again. One thing that really bothered me throughout the story was Iris continually lying to Gio about her dead husband. When they met as strangers, ok fine whatever, but once feelings started getting involved, family got involved, and Gio left so many openings for her to fess up. It just left me feeling icky. Mix in some pretty unlikely scenarios and I just never got invested enough.
