Justice Calling by Annie Bellet

This wasn't a bad start to a UF series. The plot and mythology seemed consistent, if lacking in depth. Most of the characters lacked depth, but there is room for growth.

Jade Crow is a sorceress in hiding among a town full of magical beings and humans. As long as she doesn't use much magic, which serves as a beacon, her friends won't know the truth about her and things can continue in a calm and easy fashion. Then, until a Justice of the shifters shows up and chaos begins. Upon his arrival, they discover someone is using magic to trap shifters in their animal form. As much as she tries to avoid getting involved, Jade is pulled in and forced to decide whether or not to use her magic to help.

The mystery of the book unfolded in a solid, well-paced manner. Once again, there was not a lot of depth to the plot, but it made sense and it was interesting. It was also a good showcase to demonstrate the magic system in the world. I have to say that I didn't quite understand where the author was going with the D&D link, it felt like a failed charisma roll in an effort to appeal to gamers.

I also didn't feel like there was much chemistry between Jade and Alek. There were those sex-starved thoughts of hers and smirks from him. Smirks? Was that supposed to be sexy? Then, suddenly,
Spoilerthey seem to become a couple at the end?
I think it would have been better to leave things open at the end and pick up this thread in another book. As it stands, it felt a bit forced.

For Urban Fantasy fans, this one is iffy. I think there is potential, but there are definitely much better books out there.
