i had to sit with this review for awhile. it was just.. a truly breathtaking book in every single way. the way this book came together! i’m very impressed how well Jemisin weaved all the storylines together: Nassun’s, Essun’s, and Hoa’s.

i want to say - i often love the human side of most fantasy stories more than the world-building. and this finale is very human, and incredibly well done. it builds on the previous two books and truly crescendos so well. i was desperately reading through to the end just to see how it all turns out. i haven’t felt so satisfied at how a book series has wrapped up in awhile.

Jemisin’s commentary on society, on civilizations, and on society’s treatment of those who are “other” really elevated this book and series for me overall. her writing and critiques on it all are incisive. and then at the core - a story about a mother and a daughter - is truly devastating.

overall, the Broken Earth series - while frustrating in it’s non-linear world-building - is truly top-notch. this book was a stupendous way to round it out. i can’t wait to go back and re-read it.
