See You at the Toxteth: The Best of Cliff Hardy and Corris on Crime by Peter Corris

4.0

‘Peter was a born storyteller.’

Peter Corris (1942-2018) was a man of many skills. He was an academic, an historian, a journalist and a prolific novelist. He wrote both historical and crime fiction. He was best known for the more than forty novels he wrote featuring private investigator Cliff Hardy. Should I confess that I’ve only (so far) read a few of the Cliff Hardy novels? I intend to read the rest. I very much enjoyed his historical fiction novel ‘The Gulliver Fortune’, and I loved reading his regular columns in the Newtown Review of Books (The Godfather: Peter Corris).

This book provides a selection of twelve Cliff Hardy stories, as well as the ‘ABC of Crime Writing’ (a gem) and a selection of his columns. Reading this book now, it’s difficult to remember that forty years ago there was little interest in Australian crime fiction. In many ways, Peter Corris and Cliff Hardy were trailblazers.

Recommended.
