3 Stars. When I saw this book rerelease in English, I wanted to check it out as I have a soft spot for the film adaptation by Studio Ghibli. This novel was fine, a perfectly acceptable story aimed towards middle schoolers full of wonder, loveable characters and the tiniest bit of world building.

It's hard not to compare the book to the film simply because the film, by the second half of the book, overshadows it. The first half of the book had the same feeling and rhythm as the book, with slight changes to make it feel like they were two parallels of the same story. But as the second half of the work came and went, I couldn't help but feel the film handled its themes, subject, and interpretations of the story far better. While the book was enjoyable, the film, in the end, was better.

If you enjoyed the film, give this work a shot, preferably renting from the library. But if you are going to spend money, just watch the film instead. It is a much better way to spend your money.
