The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
4.0

“Sometimes I feel sure he is as mad as a hatter and then, just as he is at his maddest, I find there is a method in his madness.”

This novel is full of Firsts: Christie’s first published book, Poirot’s first appearance (as well as the bumbling Hastings), and so many elements we take for granted. Knowing Agatha’s life, you can see how she used the knowledge of poisons she gained from her real life experience of working in hospital dispensaries during the World Wars. The way the victim is poisoned as well as all the possible ways revealed through the narrative are fascinating. She definitely knew her stuff! And what of the story? Well, it is very good. Christie plays with expectations, veering one way only to come back on herself and confuse the hell out of the reader :O) Not her best but that is understandable since it was her first.

P.S. A new book focusing on Christie as a forensic expert has just been published ([b:Murder Isn't Easy: The Forensics of Agatha Christie|43890622|Murder Isn't Easy The Forensics of Agatha Christie|Carla Valentine|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1626459616l/43890622._SY75_.jpg|68289908]) and I’m very tempted... ;O)
