Safeword by AJ Rose
5.0

Safeword is book two in author AJ Rose's compelling and, no pun intended, very powerful series. It also has one of the hottest covers of any book I've seen lately. I was so excited to get back to the lives of Gavin and Ben to see how they had fared since their attack by the serial killer in book one. I was very relieved to see that the author didn't scrimp on the difficulties these two were having. Their relationship was strong, with Gavin having moved in with Ben, but the damage the killer did to their D/s relationship was significant. And, unfortunately, that loss could have become insurmountable for them.

Gavin and his partner, Myah (I'm crazy about her!), are investigating the deaths of police officers. Found in their own homes, handcuffed with their own cuffs and their homes destroyed, Gavin and Myah are working in conjunction with another precinct and poor Gavin has to deal with his ex-partner, Trent (the schmuck)! But this new case is shaking Gavin up because it looks like another serial killer and this one is targeting cops.

Once again I have to thank the author for writing the BDSM lifestyle, the D/s relationship and the people in them in a way that I could understand and empathize with. Especially this book as he gives us more insight into Ben and what he's struggling with even a year and a half after the fact. It was heartbreaking to watch these two men work through their issues with what had happened. They loved each other so much and really needed to be able to set aside the past and just look ahead. It was a life altering journey for them to be able to recapture what they'd lost and gain new insight into their D/s relationship and I'm so glad the author took me on the ride.

The murder mystery which everything else revolves around was, again, very interesting and realistic. I did guess the perpetrator long before he was revealed but I'm okay with that because the plot line all the way to the end was riveting and completely kept my attention. Not to mention that some unexpected people crop back up briefly in a very positive way helping Gavin and Myah with their case. The ending is sad and hopeful and happy all at the same time. I really loved this book!

Last, but not least, I'm begging the author for the next story SOON! I really, really need another Gavin and Ben fix. Please, AJ.......
