the hating game is a romance novel focusing on lucy and josh, co-workers at a publishing firm that “hate” each other and follows their competition for the same promotion.

my main gripe is with the characters themselves. both joshua and lucy are extremely emotionally unintelligent, confusing, and just heightened altogether. like, i get it- she’s short and sassy and he’s tall and broody. i understand that she wears red lipstick and he has a nice body (which is referenced way too many times). but there’s not much more to the book. “main” plot is abandoned throughout the book in favor of a weird energy that

1. this is not an enemies to lovers book. the first kiss is very out of the blue and doesn’t have nearly enough build up or tension.
2. what was the point of giving us the strawberry farm parent backstory if it didn’t add anything to the plot or character depth? on a similar note, what was the point of mentioning val?
3. the ending??? why don’t we find out if she gets the promotion? is there a second book on the way or something? why’d he drop out?
4. the fact that “when we kiss, i hear some applause.” is an actual sentence in the book…
