Sweet middle-grade graphic novel about Natalie, who is hurt when her best friend Lily ditches her at the start of sixth grade. Nat makes a new friend in Zoe, but struggles with still wanting Lily to accept her, and not wanting to seem nerdy. She eventually decides to submit to a creative writing contest with her new friends' encouragement, writing a graphic novel for it, and learns to be more confident and comfortable in being herself.
This has a great message, and the cruelty of middle-schoolers rings unfortunately true. For older readers, the message - however positive - may come across a bit heavy-handed. The art style is very casual, a la Natalie's sketchbook drawings. Great to start conversation for younger readers, but probably not going to get a lot of love from a high school audience.
