Superman: Dawnbreaker by Matt de la Peña
3.0

Superman is my least favorite DC main character, so I knew this series was going to end weakly for me. The reimagining if Clark Kent was good, and Kent being a generally boring perfect guy is not Pena's fault. However, Pena tried to cram so many ideas in the background that he failed to give any sufficient real estate to dig into more deeply--I got it, but it was too much to assume the reader should know enough to care. The issues of stop-and-frisk, deportation, and racial tensions are real and hotly debated, and Pena does them a disservice by trying to air all of them in a slim number of pages. In addition to those issues being presented at the surface level, Kent's relationships with Lana, Gloria, Jonathan, and Martha were all under developed. It's like all the technical parts of writing the stories and putting the people together were there, but there wasn't depth to build them out.
