While it was entertaining, I think much of the disturbing subject matter was used purely for shock value, and to cement this as a dark romance. It didn’t add to the story or to any substantial character development… at least none for the FMC. I think the author putting “not too graphic” next to some of the trigger warnings is misleading. It was plenty graphic and upsetting imo.
I was disappointed that what felt like all of the fire and intelligence was quickly stamped out of the FMC. I liked her less as the book went on which was disappointing. I also think that at least one of the MMCs has gone too far to be redeemed, tragic backstory or not.
