This was fairly typical of this author's novels, a larger than life exaggerated tale of a group of lonely, disconnected people who come together through the local community centre, that it turns out is at threat of closure.   As they realise what they have all been missing from their lives, they band together to try to save the centre.

As is Pooley's norm, the characters border on caricatures but just about read as normal people with plenty of quirks and foibles, but ultimately a lot of sadness below the surface.  The group encompasses a menopausal empty-nester, a group of so-called senior citizens who don't feel "elderly", a nursery group and a young teenage Dad trying to navigate life on a rough estate.

An enjoyable weekend read that the reader can take as much or as little away from as they need
