On the Banks of Plum Creek: by Laura Ingalls Wilder

5.0

This book is about twice the length of the Little House books I've read aloud to my 6-year-old so far, and covers twice as much time in Laura's life. We both remained captivated by the step-by-step explanations of late 1800s country living, the careful and poetic descriptions of nature, and the kids-eye-view of family dynamics from an 8-year-old's perspective. This part of the Ingalls story is mostly destitution and disappointment, but we weren't bogged down or depressed by reading it. The constant serenity, dedication, and optimism modeled by Ma and Pa bolster the family and the reader throughout. We're excited to move on to the next one!
