Cities of Smoke and Starlight by Alli Earnest
2.0
After the beautiful cover, I expected an amazing, steampunk romance with a great world. The inside was... disappointing.
It read like [b:The Quest to the Uncharted Lands|25081301|The Quest to the Uncharted Lands (World of Solace, #3)|Jaleigh Johnson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1495919270l/25081301._SX50_.jpg|44767870] for older readers. The same steampunk styled world. A flying ship that needs to be saved. Exploring foreign people.
And, it was ok. But - the arguing. Kase and Hallie just couldn't get over it. And once they finally got along, Kase found someone else to argue with.
The world was well built, but confusing. There was Hallie, an expert at ancient civilizations. Which basically meant she could speak and read their language. Since she knew nothing else about them. And even once Hallie starting piecing everything together, I never quite understood it all.
And then it just ended. After switching to an unrelated place and time for the epilogue and featuring yet another pointless argument.
So, blame it on the beautiful cover if you'd like and the high hopes it gave me. Either way, this was disappointing.

Violence, deaths, nearly losing limbs.
Language, mostly made up and use of blasted as a curse. But it was constant.
Swearing on different gods, and vague references to their religious practices (which somehow relate to magic) and souls.
Kisses and romantic tension, offscreen pregnancy out of wedlock.
The Cerl army soldiers are identified by tattoos on their bodies.
