A.S. King infuses a mostly gritty realistic fiction tale with a magical element and humor as she surfaces issues of racism, sexual abuse, domestic violence, drug abuse, poverty, intolerance, loss, and cancer. Somehow it all works. The book is disturbing, as King intends, but, ultimately optimistic.
