Husband Material
by Alexis Hall
Unfortunately I'm feeling that 3 stars is generous. I did like a lot about Husband Material! The humor and absurd situations were still there, and there was a lot of heart in how the And a Funeral part of this Four Weddings book was handled.
Buuuut ... why was Luc suddenly so pushy about queer identity and Oliver not fitting into it perfectly? Why do they think the fucking balloon arch has so much depth and meaning? Why does bickering about a stressful wedding mean you can't be married? Why is Oliver suddenly ideologically opposed to marriage as an institution, which isn't revealed until 10 minutes before his wedding?
I absolutely agree that marriage isn't for everyone, and no one has to get married to have a happy ending in a romance. But this just feels handled very poorly in this book. Luc and Oliver are grasping at straws to argue with each other for a large chunk of the book and it just felt so forced. Neither one expressed any opposition to marriage the entire book, and both professed that they wanted to be with each other, and only each other, in a serious and committed way. And Oliver is a lawyer! Surely he knows there are legal benefits to marriage?
It just didn't work for me. Nothing about the way this was laid out convinced me that this is the way their relationship should go. I'm incredibly disappointed and thought this was going to be at least a 4 star book
