Mustard Seed

I REALLY liked this book. True that parts of it were hard to read (disturbing) - but glossing them over wouldn't have made situations like that not part of our history. Sadly they were. The older Mr. Richards was especially compelling to me - though a minor character, it was revealing to see how sweet he was to the children (though being sweet while basically telling Sadie that, as a female, she's not a real person) but then how violent he was with Mattie & Jordan. I can only imagine how hard it would have been to determine who was "good" and who was not during those days.
Really, the only thing standing between 4 and 5 stars for me is that some of the characters just felt so canned. Jack was too obviously evil, "mother" too self-centered and shallow, Jordan too angry- but just angry without much else to her. But, that's really my only criticism. I thought it was well written, does a great job with developing emotion, and is a really good read. Definitely highly recommend it.
