These Are the Words by Nikita Gill

5.0

True Rating: 5/5 Stars

It's hard for me to rate a poetry collection versus a novel or short story collection, especially since I don't read poetry often. Nikita Gill is one of the major exceptions. I remember coming across one of her poems being quoted on Tumblr back in the day, and I was intrigued. However, I didn't pick up any of her work until 2018, when I found "Fierce Fairytales" in a bookstore in Seoul. I bought it, read it, and became an instant fan.

So I bought this collection with no hesitation, without even reading what it's about. And let me tell you: it may be classified as a YA poetry collection, but the words in here will resonate with women of any age. The words collected in these pages are angry, sad, hopeful, despairing, hard, soft -they're a collection of the contradictions that make up real life women, separated into different seasons and some of the themes associated with the seasons. There's words about anger, words about healing, words about found family, words about being different. Some of the poems in this collection are very obviously aimed at a specific set of women, but I guarantee that EVERY woman will find something in here.

Nikita Gill continues to write words that I want to gift to my niece when she's old enough, to tell her the things I'm sure my brother won't because he'll never think of it.
