The first third/half of the book was super compelling and drew me right in but it fell off hugely following the twist that comes about 2/3 of the way through, even though it was unexpected . It also felt like it had been set up to explore themes of queerness and chosen family but then lost interest/confidence to do so and ended up being much more dull as a result. I was excited about the possibility of it being a story about a trans experience especially as James Barry was mentioned but given what happened after the twist was revealed I had slight gender critical vibes.... Agree with other reviews that the ending itself which explains the central mystery to the story felt rushed and unbelievable - felt a bit ripped off. Disappointing!
