Starfish by Lisa Fipps
4.0

Fipps does not shy from difficult themes. Her second book tackles child poverty and this one is about an obese middle school who is tortured by her family, classmates, and society because of her weight. (The author states that many of these were her own personal experiences.) It was so hard reading about the cruelty from her mother and my heart broke when the character stated, "I felt as though my mom would only love me if I was thin". I could not relate to some of the horrible experiences but definitely felt the shame my weight caused my own mother. The entire book is told in prose and her friends, Liv and Catalina, her therapist, English teacher, school librarian, and her father provide some light to the novel. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with their self-image or is bullied for whom they are.
