I think I liked this one better than the first one in some respects. I think the character development of Xaden and Violet learning how to communicate with each other productively was great—it’s not the kind of thing you typically see in these kinds of books. I’m still waiting to see if the broader plot starts looking at or more seriously unpacking the inherent violence and cruelty of the school/broader country. I think that will come around again since Yarros seems to be so diligently inclusive in the text (I’m particularly tickled by the inclusivity of deaf characters), so I do think it would come around. I’ll keep reading the series.
