The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner

2.0

Audiobook: great narrator. Leans a bit far into YA for me with young love etc. fantasy and folklore - the Bear and the Nightingale stories were better in my mind. The characters were more well rounded.

But this story also drew on historical events and history of the Jewish experience in late 19th and early 20th century Eastern Europe including the racism and pogroms they experienced there. It was also tied to the author’s own story which she explains in the afterward. And it introduced me to Christina Rossetti’s short story/ fable The Goblin Market which was very good and featured quite prominently in this novel.

Interesting story and backstory but it didn’t engage me like others of this genre have.
