I LOVE all of Roald Dahl's books, but I have to admit this one has not aged as well as others in some ways. Humorous and fun to read, it is definitely enjoyable, however the entire plot hinges on a man longing after a woman and initiating a relationship through deceit and trickery. There is no consequence for basing his entire relationship on lies and they end 'happily married.'
I would still definitely read this with children, but it is probably best read with a discussion of how relationships and the treatment of women has changed over time and a modern story would likely end differently. I think inviting children to consider their own views on relationships based on trickery and creating their own ending might be a great supplement to this book. But, I am also more sensitive to this topic and it rubbed me the wrong way. Still, a hilarious and wonderfully written read!
