The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

4.25-4.5 ★
being a book i picked up for ap lit, it was captivating and complex in the way it wrote about mother-daughter relationships and struggles that come with culture and disconnect. i understand why it’s regarded as a modern classic.
i found the structure actually quite easy to follow despite having 7 different voices, especially since each character had unique features (whether it was their backstory, talents, or appearance) that i could tie to their names and follow as such. the biggest plus on my part was that i could feel the palpable emotion that comes with the culture. i thought extensively of my mom and my grandma, and their stories that may be similar to these characters; it made me connect with my background more.
anyways, my heart aches and i’m glad this was a choice for required reading! i thought i’d have too little ideas for an essay but i might actually have too many
