A Christmas Memory, One Christmas, & The Thanksgiving Visitor by Truman Capote

4.0

This collection of three short stories was bittersweet. So many fond memories intermixed with sad ones. I really enjoyed A Christmas Memory. It’s the story of Capote as a 7 year old living with relatives one Christmas in rural Alabama. Capote’s relationship with “his friend”, a 60-something cousin, and their traditions were so special. This story made me smile.

One Christmas was sad but provided a lot of insight into A Christmas Memory. It gave a glimpse into the rocky childhood Capote had and how he came to live with his Alabama relatives.

The Thanksgiving Visitor was a nice story but not as good as A Christmas Memory. It recounts a Thanksgiving Capote spent with his relatives in rural Alabama and his difficulties with a local bully.

I’ve never read Capote before. I enjoyed his writing and I’m interested in reading his novels now.
