Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

If you watched the movie already, no worries, just dive into it: it's a whole different story

This is something I wish I knew earlier: the book and the movie are two completely different stories. Besides the characters themselves and the Egg Hunt that's at the center of the entire adventure, everything plays out differently. Because I both enjoyed the re-watch of the movie and the book within the same month, I actually appreciated this difference, because I got to go through two different versions on the similarly geeky path full of references of the 80's game and movie classics without it feeling like the exact same and already known experience all over again.

Likes

You can feel how much nerdy love and time was put into writing this story and that's what I appreciate it most: how we can all share the same collective nostalgia throughout it. Ernest Cline does everything well in his debut book: from world-building, across character development, to pacing. This was a fun and easy read, enjoyable through every page.

Dislikes

Even though some descriptions slowed down the pace a bit, I'm not sure shortening them could have been possible without losing a bit of the world-building, so I'd say it was not that bad.

Audience

If you love the 80's, especially the cinematography and early gaming consoles and games, this is a must read. Even if you're a bit younger and did not grow up in that period, just like the characters in the story, you can catch up and enjoy the classics that made history.

Rating

5/5 stars, no doubt. One of my favorite reads this year.
