Taste: My Life Through Food by Stanley Tucci

emotional funny informative inspiring lighthearted medium-paced

5.0

Actor and food obsessed Stanley Tucci recounts his childhood and life through food in this intimate memoir. Before his life of fame, Tucci grew up in his Italian family where time was most precious around the dinner table. Taste is a reflection and intersection of food and life, a heartwarming read for those who know the power of a home cooked meal.

I’ve always been a fan of celebrity memoirs as there’s something so otherworldly about famous people. That being said the extent of my like for Stanley Tucci has been honestly pretty low. I knew a couple movies he’s been in, I knew he seemed to be a stand up human and I knew he liked food. So why was I drawn to this memoir?! I honestly have no idea other than I’ve been seeing it floating around and I’ve been cooking more myself.

I’m so glad I picked it up! I found this to be a relaxing read, kind of like a bowl of soup on a day you need some comfort food. Not only did Tucci share his life through food and family recipes he also delved into gentrification, the loss of authentic restaurants, diners and coffee shops and how the pandemic changed how we consume food. I also really enjoyed the peak into how different countries cater food on movie sets, that was so neat! A bit of a behind the scenes if you will.

This was such a relaxing wonderful read, highly recommend for food and Tucci lovers or just curious folks like myself, 5✨. Fun fact - I went and rematched The Devil Wears Prada after reading this and I’m totally going to rewatch an old time fave - Julie & Julia.
