despite there being major ups and downs, and backstories on backstories crammed inside this book, mcbride seamlessly pulls everything together. a stunning portrait of lower class life in a small town in the 1920s and 30s, and so meticulously crafted through such thorough research this might as well have been written first-hand by the characters themselves. my favorite book i've read so far this year, and will definitely be reading again soon.
