The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

4.0

I'm gutted by this novel of lives abused, neglected, and destroyed. I knew nothing about the story going into it, and wished I had known it was a series of narratives interconnected, because at first I felt the desire to rush ahead and learn more about Pecola. When I realized it was a chain of stories, I relaxed into each character's life, uncomfortable as they were. Morrison is a highly skilled writer, and while terribly sad, a pleasure to read. I gave it 4 stars because I know this is just the beginning of her work.
