With Harry on forced leave and going through mandatory visits to a LAPD psychologist, reeling from a break up and on the brink of losing his house following the winter 94 earthquake, he decides the time has come to use his free time for a little wholly unsanctioned reopening of the unsolved murder case of his Meredith Lowe, his own mother.

Maybe the strongest of the early Bosch novels. Connelly ties up brilliantly a lot of the back story threads introduced since the first book, and manages to write a novel that's in a way entirely devoted to delving deep into Harry Bosch and his psyche, while still delivering a great if atypical police procedural along the way.
