City of Ghosts by V.E. Schwab

4.0

City of Ghosts is just another example of why Victoria Schwab is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The story is easy to fall into with its interesting and likable characters, descriptive setting and creative plot. Even though most of the really juicy stuff, happens towards the end, you're still hooked right from the start and the pace of the story is just right.

Cassidy and Jacob are two very well written characters. They have great awareness of the uniqueness of their relationship, the dangers it poses and each others boundaries and limits. It was nice to see that even with the seriousness of their adventure, they were still able to be kids. I thought Cassidy's relationship with her parents was interesting given what she can do and what they do for a living. I'm curious to see how much more needs to occur before the relationship changes and if its for better or worse. I know Jacob's past was left vague on purpose, however, I'll be looking forward to learning more about his life and death, as well as, seeing how his relationship with Cassidy grows.

This book is spooky without being scary, and I loved that, since I'm not a horror fan. Their are a good amount of "Harry Potter" references throughout the book, which I'm sure you'll enjoy, if you are part of the fandom. I personally felt like some of them seemed a bit forced, however, they didn't take away from the plot. I do look forward to the next book in this series. I'm eager to learn what happens next.
