Thirty-Three Teeth by Colin Cotterill
The second Dr. Siri Paibon book. He's national (and I think only) coroner in a fictional Laos. He's in his seventies, and quite past bullshit and politics, but does care about solving the mysteries of the deaths that come to his office. He's very funny. The books have a big dollop of mysticism (he's the vessel for a spirit, which complicates things).
