Alice in the Country of Hearts, Vol. 1 by QuinRose

5.0

I started reading this manga on the recommendation of a good friend, and I'm quite surprised at how much I'm enjoying it.

Alice in the Country of Hearts, so far, is definitely like it's Japanese otome game predecessor, where many men (and even the Queen of Hearts) vie for Alice Liddell's affection, all the while battling each other for territories in the Country of Hearts with ordinary objects that transform into handguns. But beneath the topsy-turvy, comedic, and pentagonal(?) web that forms the upper layer if the story is a very dark, mysterious, and foreboding side that's quite intriguing and poses very good amounts of suspense. QuinRose, the author, definitely seems to know what they're doing in keeping me hooked, and Soumei Hoshino's shoujo art style makes for some very gorgeous (and romantic) panels.

If you like Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland, fantasy, romance, and a dash of action and mystery, this retelling is worth looking at (I can't wait to pick up the second volume myself).
