The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
3.0
challenging dark mysterious tense slow-paced

William is coolest at the outset, showing off his skills of deduction by solving the abbey’s horse mystery. If he had remained that cool and Sherlock Holmes-esque throughout I think I might’ve liked the story more. Which shouldn’t be taken as me thinking the story has no merit, it’s just that so much went over my head. There’s so much erudition in this novel it’s filled up the little cavity in my head and is pouring out my eyes now. I can’t seem to keep anything in. (I found the meat of the story a bit boring.)
Setting a murder mystery in a medieval abbey is neat as hell. As I read I was continually reminded on the game Pentiment, so much so that I think the game must have been significantly inspired by Rose.
Based on what I read in the afterword/explanation section, my understanding of the title is that Eco chose it because it has no semantic meaning in relation to the story? I hope I misunderstood. I shake my fist at you, my nemesis, Semantics Man!
