The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

4.0

Ok, so that was that. I don't know what I was expecting. I liked it, but I also feel kind of meh.

I'll start by pointing out what I liked. As every Riordan book, the characters are funny, likeable and easy to read about. The story is ful of action, comedy and mythological knowledge that can be very useful for middle-grade readers. THe tone of the book is not that infantile tha older readers feel alienated.

I liked that it continues with the storyline from Percy Jackson and that both stories are interrelated.

But yes, there are several things I didn't liked at all. First, from the very beginning, quite a lot of female characters are portrayed as bad. Hera, Aphrodite, Aphrodite's children. The only one that seems to escape this doom is Piper, because obviousle sheis the proagonists. But not only that, she also is "special", she is beautiful and cool because "she is no like other girls". Come on, Riordan is a better writer than that. You can be a bitch and dress like a tomboy, or be perfectly fine dressing like a princess. #NOPE. In favour of Riordan I can say that at least he redeems Hera and Aphrodite by giving them the opportunty to explain themselves.

Also, the big bad guy (who also happens to be a woman). It's very obvious from the very beginning. Anyone with a very basic knowledge of mythology would know who that is. The clues are there, if I can see it, Piper, who says that reseached a lot with her dad could have seen it. SO IT'S VERY ANOYING TO SPEND THRE QUARTERS OF THE BOOK KNOWING WHO THE BAD GUY IS WHILE THE PROTAGONISTS DO NOT.

Other than that, my last main worry is that the characters look like copies of Percy's books or even the Kane Chronicles (which I didn't finish). Maybe it's because it's been years since I last read Percy Jackson, but Im sure I could not distinguish Jason and Percy when talking. Riordan is using the same templeate for this characters, and that's not a bad thing, because it works, but it also can be very boring.

I would definitely be reading the next books since I already have them in kindle, but I sincerely hope that the next ones are better than the first, or I'm up for a painful ride.
