Girls in Pants by Ann Brashares

2.0

This is one of those book series that I started reading years ago and continued to read as each new book came out, despite possibly outgrowing them. The traveling pants books are an especially odd case since I'm not ever overly impressed by the writing overall. But it's like watching a soap opera: I know it's subpar but I'm sucked in enough to want to know what drama happens next.

A pet peeve I have about Brashares is that she always sticks at least one of the four girls with a storyline in which she could be happy but is resisting it for some half-baked emotional reason. In other words, there is at least one storyline that I'm frustrated with whenever it pops up. Also by only telling about the summer, Brashares cheats the reader out of emotional closure. At the end of book two, Lena meets a guy who she supposedly has this amazing connection with. In book three we are given the barest of explanations about why it didn't work out. That is quite frustrating.
