The Unquiet Dead by Ausma Zehanat Khan

4.0

Review of the audiobook.

This book is Intense with a capital "I". I'm always on the lookout for a good mystery (bonus points if it is a series) and this one did not disappoint. Esa Khattak and Rachel Getty are called to investigate the death of a man who fell over a cliff to decide if it was suicide, accident or murder. They work for a special department dealing with racial crimes and this does not seem to be one. Though they quickly learn that Christopher Drayton, the man who's death they are investigating, is not who he seems. This leads them to delve into the Bosnian community in Toronto. Things quickly become very, very complicated.

I learned so much from reading this book, particularly about the Bosnian-Serbian War in the 1990's (TW: sexual assault, torture). None of it was easy reading but the author does a great job of interweaving the past and the present in a way that allows you to breathe between the hard parts. My only qualm with the book was that I did not find myself connecting with Esa Khattak and, as the main character, that took me out of the story a bit. But I'll be picking up the next book because of the strong writing.
