The Romantic Tragedies of a Drama King by Harry Trevaldwyn
4.25
Patch Simmons is ready for love.
This is the year he will get a boyfriend and have his first kiss.
He just needs to find a boy first.
Y’all, I was charmed by this one. The author captures the teenage experience; the characters feel and act their age. And, although Patch’s behavior and feelings trend towards the dramatic with over-the-top flair and he can be a bit myopic and concerned primarily with his own wants and needs at times, he has a good heart. I was cheering him on.
There are moments that made me grin, moments that gave me secondhand embarrassment, moments that made me say, “Oh, honey,” and moments that warmed my heart.
Along the way, you experience the highs and lows of high school friendships, popularity, crushes, and first kisses.
Great for the theatre kids, this one would appeal to fans of Allison L. Bitz’s The Unstoppable Bridget Bloom and Emma Lord’s When You Get the Chance.
If you’re a fan of audiobooks, I highly recommend listening to this one. Read by the author, you feel dropped right into Patch’s brain, feeling all of those big feelings right there with him. The author is an actor himself and does a fantastic job capturing the nuances of each character in his performance.
I received a copy of the book from Wednesday Books and a copy of the audiobook from Macmillan Audio. All review opinions are my own.
