There's much that can be said to be flawed regarding this book. The peculiar notes from a future point of few. The somewhat uneven character of the whole. But it more than makes up for it in style, in showing a past world in decay, in masterfully setting a personal story against the backdrop of History (capital H), in a thoroughly human main character, in humour, and in some of the strongest pieces of literature in general.
