Blood Bonds
by J. Bree
Okay, I’m out. For real this time. I think. Fingers crossed this review is a reminder and keeps me from jumping back in. It’s just the reviews are misleading and make me think that I need to keep holding out for something better.
Anyway, these are the reasons I’m jumping ship:
1. this was kind of boring. It was a struggle to finish and I kept putting it down to play on my phone, clean the house, etc. I technically finished this quickly but it was just so I didn’t have to drag it past my holiday break.
2. Oli is powerful and dangerous, yet, her Bonds/Bonded treat her like glass. The coddling gets old fast. And then you start to wonder about how the group is running themselves ragged trying to protect their community while Oli mostly sleeps. She wants to do more but no one will let her because she’s a precious flower (with a psychotic entity inside her). When the Resistance shows up to Sanctuary, they tell Oli to hang back when she can literally end all of them in seconds. Cut the f***ing cord and use your assets.
3. I’m thoroughly confused by Atlas saying only his mom knows he’s bonds with Oli even though his parents received a report when he was younger saying he was part of the Draven bond group. Did the report not mention Oli? Was that a detail I forgot from an earlier book?
4. I’m beyond tired of the word ‘bond’. There are sentences where it’s used no less than 3 times (e.g., my bond will be pissed if my Bonds and Bonded are upset).
5. There’s too many characters. I have to remember the names of all of Oli’s Bonds, Sage’s Bonds, the Tac Team, the Resistance members, the Council, Oli’s Bond’s family members. I have to keep pausing to try to place (imaginary) faces to names and it’s not going well. And don’t get me started on the moments when they switch to using last names instead of first.
6. Minor issue but Oli went from, ‘this house is too big and I keep getting lost’ to ‘this four bedroom house is too small and I’m losing my mind’. Felt very bratty considering there are plenty of people sharing homes with people outside of their bonded group because Sanctuary is still being built.
So why 2 stars instead of 1? One star is for when there’s nothing redeeming. Here, there are moments sprinkled throughout that I find sweet instead of overbearing. I also was desperate for the moment when we learn more about Nox’s past and he finally gets on board with bonding Oli. But not desperate enough to finish this series.
