Have We Met? by Camille Baker
funny
4.0
In Have We Met? after losing her best friend to cancer, Corinne has moved back to Chicago, wanting to figure out her next career move. A dating app called Met mysteriously appears on her phone (kind of like how that U2 album suddenly popped up on our iPhones out of nowhere years ago?) promising that Cori will be reconnected with four people from her past & and one of these connections is her ✨soulmate✨
I’ve shared before that soulmates isn’t my favorite trope and can be hit or miss for me. This worked. I thought the app/soulmate connection was an interesting concept. The magic of the dating app at times felt like more explanation was needed, so you just have to accept it for what it is.
Was the romance predictable? Yes. Regardless, I enjoyed seeing the relationship play out. What I liked about this story overall was its simplicity. A Black woman just navigating her life: work, love, grief/loss & growth.
Corinne was able to just ✨exist✨without much drama, trauma or explanation, and I loved that for her. I loved that for me too, as the reader 😌
[CW: grief, cancer, death of a friend]
