Well, I’m bummed. I loved the previous three Katherine Center books but felt this one was just okay. It was sweet, don’t get me wrong, but the writing and narration was so mediocre that it distracted from the story. Hannah’s character didn’t seem well fleshed out and, as the reader, I felt confused. Is she tough? Is she quirky? Is she super smart? Is she confident? Is she full of self doubt? It felt like the author didn’t really know who the character was so it made her dialogue less convincing. Plus her narration style was annoying to me and her “voice” didn’t seem to match up with who she was as a character as a character. The relationship with Jack was sweet and I liked their time of the ranch. The whole end plot seemed really out there and unbelievable though. I won’t give away too much. Plus there were so many instances where I felt like the author was telling us something without actually showing us and it felt like I was missing parts of the story or relationship development that was important. It felt like, as a reader, I was being kept at a distance and that took me out of the story and made me feel less engaged. It felt really rushed at times, especially at the end. I wanted to like this much more than I did but I’ll give KC another chance. Beautiful cover art, as always, though!
