The second book in the Empyrean series did not disappoint!
Something Rebecca Yarros is really good at is making you empathise with the characters - it is so easy to hate with them, ache with them, love with them and laugh with them.
The first book was brutal and this book continues to deliver on that front. There are some really good villains and some surprise appearances - although one surprise wasn’t too welcome in my opinion (no spoilers here!).
The pace is slower in comparison to the first book and the book slightly lulls at the 30-40% mark but this is largely due to the amount of build up and scene setting. There are a lot of details in this book and it is extremely immersive.
There are times I completely forgot about things that had happened in earlier parts of the book, and arguably the book didn’t need to be this long. On the other hand, this is testament to Rebecca Yarros’ writing and how immersed you become in the story and the character’s timeline.
Throughout the story, Xaden and Violet’s relationship continues to evolve and develop alongside the plot and this is something I really enjoyed. This was also true for a lot of the other supporting characters which added further depth to the story. New characters were also seamlessly, well integrated into the story.
